What happened

The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) was set up by the Department of Defense in 2022. Since 2025 its documents have carried the department’s new “Department of War” name. Its job is to collect and analyse reports of unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP). The government’s PURSUE releases on war.gov publish cases that are still open. AARO’s “case resolution” reports are the other half: cases it says it has closed, each with a short PDF, usually an official image, and sometimes a video on DVIDS.

Access note: every AARO quote comes from the copies downloaded from the official aaro.mil URLs at 10:15 ET the same day, which are logged in our downloads inventory, and we cite the official URLs below.

What believers claim

Believers argue that resolution reports are public relations: easy cases get closed loudly while the hard ones stay classified. Some also argue that AARO’s confidence language (“moderate”, “almost certainly”) shows it is guessing. Others say that saying an object “did not exhibit anomalous behavior” is not the same as identifying it. That last point is fair, and AARO itself makes it in some reports.

What the research found

Each report states a finding and a confidence level, and the confidence varies. These are AARO’s own words, read from each PDF:
