What happened

Over the first half of August 2026, a short video spread across Spanish-language social media and then into English-language UFO coverage. It shows a small, white, roughly circular object hanging still in a pale sky over what is described as Medellín, Colombia’s second-largest city. The people filming watch it for several seconds. Then it seems to shrink and disappear, and one of them exclaims, “¡Yo no puedo creer lo que acabamos de grabar!” (“I can’t believe what we just recorded!”).

On 11 August, Coast to Coast AM ran it under the headline “Watch: Vanishing UFO Astonishes Witnesses in Colombia”. C2C described “an odd orb that hovered in the sky before suddenly disappearing” and wrote: “The strange sighting reportedly occurred late last month in the city of Medellín”. The video on C2C’s page is not a YouTube or X upload. It is a Facebook reel posted by Popayán al Día, a news page named after a city about 400 km south of Medellín. On 4 Nov 2026, the reel’s public page showed about 3,300 views and 15 reactions, with the caption “¿OVNI en Medellín? ¡Alerta!”. The caption’s next line names the Mexican ufologist Jaime Maussan, which suggests the page was passing on a clip that had already circulated in Maussan’s orbit.

Our original post went with C2C’s framing. On a second look, the date and the chain of custody are both weaker than that framing implies.

Timeline

  • 12 July 2026 (claimed): A post on Reddit’s r/UfoUapUsoOrbSightings is titled “Medellín, Colombia, July 12, 2026”. Search snippets describe a white object filmed from a restaurant terrace. Reddit returned an access error to automated readers, so the post is known only from search snippets, and the date is treated as a claim only.
  • 29 July 2026, 16:18 (UTC-6): Azteca Chihuahua reports a viral video “grabado presuntamente en Colombia” (“allegedly filmed in Colombia”) by people at a restaurant, showing a luminous shape that changes form.
  • 30 July 2026, 18:18 (UTC-6): Azteca Yucatán places a similar clip over Medellín, filmed by a family whose members begin chanting.
  • 6 August 2026, 11:40 (UTC-6): Página Central (Mexico) publishes the vanishing-orb clip with the Spanish quote, set in Medellín. This is the earliest dated report among the cited sources that matches C2C’s video.
  • 11 August 2026: Coast to Coast AM and its iHeart mirror publish “Watch: Vanishing UFO Astonishes Witnesses in Colombia”, embedding the Popayán al Día Facebook reel.
  • 11 August 2026, 14:06 (UTC-5): Telemedellín reports a separate set of viral clips showing a bright white point over Tapartó, in Andes, Antioquia, filmed hours after an earthquake. That event is different, but it shows how many sky clips were circulating in the region that week.
  • 11 August 2026: Redacted Weekly publishes the first version of this post.

What believers claim

The re-posts, and the reader reactions the coverage reports, push three main claims. The first is that the object was a structured craft holding position with no visible means of propulsion. Página Central’s write-up describes it as something that “se sostiene en un mismo punto en el aire” (“holds itself at a single point in the air”). The second is that the sudden disappearance shows active camouflage. Página Central reports that some viewers said it “podría tratarse de un sistema de camuflaje instantáneo” (“could be an instant camouflage system”). The third is that the endorsement of a well-known investigator, Jaime Maussan, makes the clip more credible. None of these claims comes with data beyond the video.

What the research found

1. The witnesses’ own upload is missing from every cited report. C2C embeds a Facebook reel from Popayán al Día. That page is a regional news outlet, not the people on the terrace, and its caption names Maussan, so it is at least a second-hand share. Página Central credits only “Redes sociales” (“social networks”). Without the original post, there is no upload time, no account and no unedited file.
