What happened

On Monday night, 29 June 2026, a resident of Sierra Colorada, a small town on the Línea Sur of Argentina’s Río Negro province, filmed lights over Cerro Energizante. The hill is 3 km outside town and known for its red rock and hiking trails. According to Bariloche’s El Cordillerano, the resident and their partner first saw a single light “aparecía y desaparecía” (appearing and disappearing). Two more lights then joined it and began moving around the hill. The resident sent the clip to El Cordillerano Radio. El Cordillerano quotes them as saying: “En Sierra tenemos bosque petrificado, dinosaurios, cordero y luces en el cielo, todo en un solo lugar” (“In Sierra we have a petrified forest, dinosaurs, lamb and lights in the sky, all in one place”).

The next day, 1 July, El Cordillerano reported that the attention the first video got had led it to a second recording, filmed in front of Cerro Catedral, Bariloche’s ski mountain. The paper said it showed “los mismos objetos luminosos” (“the same luminous objects”) moving up and down “de manera coordinada” (“in a coordinated way”). On 2 July, Diario Río Negro asked a local astronomer, who said the lights were satellites.

We do not name the Sierra Colorada resident. They are a private person, even though the newspaper printed their social-media handle.

What believers claim

The El Cordillerano follow-up presents the two clips as one event. It says the second recording “confirma que se trató del mismo episodio” (“confirms it was the same episode”). It also notes that Patagonia “ha sido considerado una zona propicia” (“has been considered a favourable zone”) for UFO sightings. Local enthusiasts point to the coordinated up-and-down motion and the lights appearing and vanishing. They also point to the claim that the same three lights turned up at two places hundreds of kilometres apart, which they say no aircraft would do.

What the research found

1. Both videos are real uploads by the newspaper, with clear dates. El Cordillerano posted both clips to its own YouTube channel, on 30 June and 1 July. These are the originals we embed above. The first clip’s origin is clear: a named reader, a named hill and a night (Monday 29 June). The second clip’s origin is not. The paper does not say who filmed it, from where, or on what date.
