Two Witnesses, One Church Lot, One Possible Sasquatch in South Carolina

What happened

Late on Friday 29 May 2026, two friends were driving Highway 292 between Inman and Lyman in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The driver’s report to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) says that around 11:30pm they “topped a hill just before the Lake Cooley bridge when on my right my lights hit a very large creature.” He describes it as “Bipedal, well over 6ft tall, closer to 7ft. Completely upright,” and says it “turned and moved quickly back into the woods upright.”

The figure was near a church parking lot, about 11 miles northwest of Spartanburg. BFRO’s file names both witnesses. Coast to Coast AM used their first names. They’re private people, so we call them the driver and the passenger, and we don’t name the church.

Media evidence: none. There are no photos and no video. BFRO’s own notes say they “didn’t get a photo or go look for tracks.”

Timeline

• c. 1940: the “Greetings from Inman” postcard shows the town (featured image).
• 15 August 1993: an earlier Inman report. A resident told BFRO (#417) that a “large hairy animal” in a gully “stood up like a human on two feet” and was about 6 ft tall.
• 29 May 2026, about 11:30pm: the Highway 292 sighting. The report describes “Very dark conditions, a few streetlights on a rural road.”
• 31 May 2026, about 1:20pm: BFRO’s South Carolina investigator, S.L., interviews the driver by phone.
• 1 June 2026 (the day after the call): S.L. searches the site for several hours.
• Early June 2026: follow-up interviews with both witnesses, and notes from BFRO founder Matt Moneymaker.
• 23 June 2026: Coast to Coast AM / iHeart publish “Pair of Witnesses Report Possible Sasquatch Sighting in South Carolina.”

What believers claim

The case has two witnesses who both saw the figure and who told the same story more than once. The driver wrote: “My initial though[t] was a bear but bear do not move that fluid on 2 feet.” The passenger told the investigator it was so big that it looked like “a horse standing on its hind legs”, and he repeated that comparison several times. Both men said the figure’s movements “appeared more human than animal.” Later, stopped at the next traffic signal, they agreed it looked big enough that it “could have easily reached and touched the traffic signal.”

What the research found

The viewing was short and in the dark. The report itself says “It was very dark.” The investigator writes that “the distance and brief duration of the sighting prevented them from seeing facial details.” Moneymaker’s notes put the first headlight contact at “roughly 150 feet distance”. The figure then “quickly” walked across the parking lot and into the woods.
