What happened
On the evening of Friday 31 July 2026, at least five residents on Bozeman’s west side heard and felt a single heavy boom. The Bozeman Daily Chronicle’s Emma Jane Jackson reported on 4 August that it shook walls and rattled windows between about 8 and 8:15pm.
One couple near Chief Joseph Middle School was watching a film. The wife told the paper: “It was like deep, vibrating boom. You could feel it in your chest. But nobody knew what it was.” A man walking his dog about a mile and a half away said: “It sounded like a firework, but it was a different kind of sound than that boom you get from a firework.”
This is a sound story. None of the cited sources describes any video or audio recording of the 31 July boom. The evidence is residents’ accounts, one 911 call and the checks officials made afterwards.
Timeline
- 4 July 1805: Near the Great Falls of the Missouri, Meriwether Lewis writes of a repeated noise “resembling precisely the discharge of a piece of ordnance of 6 pounds at the distance of three miles” and says, “I am at a loss to account for this phenomenon” (journal text as quoted by Distinctly Montana).
- 2001: A night-time boom rattles the Gallatin Valley. The Chronicle says officials traced it within a day to two Montana Air National Guard F-16s breaking the sound barrier.
- 5 June 2022, about 6pm: A loud boom is heard from Bozeman to Livingston and West Yellowstone, with no official cause, according to Distinctly Montana.
- 2 May 2023: The Bozeman City Commission adopts Ordinance 2134, banning the sale and discharge of fireworks in city limits without a permit.
- Mid-2025 onward: Residents report recurring booms on Facebook and Reddit.
- 31 July 2026, about 8:05pm: A resident near Chief Joseph Middle School calls 911 to report something that “sounded like a bomb went off.”
- 4 August 2026: The Chronicle publishes its report.
- 17 August 2026, about 2:08am: A Reddit thread on r/Bozeman logs another round of booms across town.
- August 2026: The community site bozemanboom.com starts mapping reports.
What believers claim
The “Bozeman Boom” now has its own folklore. One resident told the Chronicle what he heard from friends: “I’ve heard conspiracy theories about supersonic drones breaking the sound barrier, underground tunnels being built for the elites.” Distinctly Montana adds the theory that elites are carving out bunkers in the mountains. Others link the booms to the “skyquakes” or “Seneca Guns” reported in other states, and to the noise Lewis and Clark described in 1805.
What the research found
1. Every agency the Chronicle asked ruled out its own equipment. Bozeman Police Captain Anthony Hutchings said officers responded to the 8:05pm call but turned up no source. “These things happen often enough,” he said. He suggested a transformer. NorthWestern Energy spokesperson Jo Dee Black told the paper the utility had no incidents on its infrastructure that would explain it. Airport director Brian Sprenger said nothing from an aviation standpoint accounted for it. Public affairs officers for the Montana National Guard and Malmstrom Air Force Base said their records showed no military activity in the area.
