What happened

Pyramids, all-seeing eyes, hand signs and secret bloodlines: “the Illuminati” and “the New World Order” are the conspiracy world’s catch-all villains. One was real for about a decade in the 1700s. The other is a phrase a U.S. president used in a 1990 speech. Here’s how they merged, and the ugly forgery underneath. (Membership card not included with your dollar bill.)

The real Illuminati. Adam Weishaupt was a professor of canon law at the University of Ingolstadt. On 1 May 1776 in Bavaria he founded a secret society, the Bavarian Illuminati. Its stated goals were to oppose superstition, religious influence over public life and abuses of state power by monarchs, per Wikipedia’s sourced article.

It didn’t last. Elector Charles Theodore of Bavaria, with Church encouragement, outlawed the Illuminati, Freemasonry and other secret societies in edicts of 1784, 1785, 1787 and 1790. Weishaupt fled. The government seized the group’s internal papers in 1786–87 and published them in 1787. The most secret society in the world has had its paperwork in print since the 18th century.

The footage

We’re not embedding video for this case. There is no footage of the 18th-century society, and “Illuminati exposed” videos online are commentary, not evidence. The most relevant recording is President George H. W. Bush’s televised address of 11 September 1990. This post quotes its official transcript from the American Presidency Project rather than describing a clip.

What witnesses reported

These are claims, not facts:

  • The Illuminati never died and controls governments, banks, the UN and entertainment.
  • The “New World Order” is a planned one-world totalitarian government.
  • The pyramid and eye on the dollar bill are Illuminati signatures.
  • Black helicopters and FEMA camps are being readied for a takeover.

What the research found

How a dead club became a living myth. In 1797–98, Augustin Barruel’s Memoirs Illustrating the History of Jacobinism and John Robison’s Proofs of a Conspiracy argued that the Illuminati had survived and was behind the French Revolution. The template stuck: whatever upheaval was happening, a hidden society was blamed.
