Watch the real thing: Paxton’s concession speech on C-SPAN
C-SPAN’s recording of Ken Paxton’s election-night concession speech to supporters. FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth and USA Today also posted video of the speech (links below).
The claim
On election night, an image styled as an NBC News broadcast still began spreading on X. It showed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Republican Senate nominee, with an on-screen quote: “I cannot accept that the result tonight was free or fair…” The quote was presented as his reaction to losing to Democrat James Talarico. According to DW’s fact-check team, the image passed 700,000 views.
A second doctored NBC-style graphic, also circulating on election night, showed Republicans winning both the House and the Senate. Per DW, it drew 1.7 million views.

What believers claim
Shared alongside the fake still, the narrative was that Paxton had refused to concede and was declaring the Texas result illegitimate. That fed a broader claim that the midterms were stolen. The GOP-sweep graphic pushed the opposite story, that Republicans had won and the “real” results were being hidden. Both used NBC’s look to borrow a major network’s credibility.
What the research found
Paxton conceded on camera. In his election-night speech, Paxton told supporters he was “congratulating James Talarico. I will commit that I will be praying for him, that he will do good for Texas and this nation.” He added: “We’ve had a difficult night tonight across the country, but it’s not over.” The speech is on C-SPAN and was also posted by FOX 4 and USA Today, and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported it. None of those records contains the “free or fair” line.
