Lewiston, Maine CCTV: Interpreters Helping Voters, or a ‘Coordinated Scheme’?

The claim

On the day before Election Day, The Maine Wire posted security video from early voting at Lewiston City Hall and wrote that “a highly coordinated scheme to steal an election is happening in real time”. The Maine Wire is the media arm of the conservative Maine Policy Institute. The clip shows people the outlet calls interpreters standing with voters at the booths, pointing at and in some shots marking ballots. Reposts said the voters were Somali-American and that the helpers were filling in ballots for Democrats. DW Fact Check, on 4 Nov, said the post had passed 700,000 views.

Timeline

• 13 Oct 2026: in-person absentee voting opens at Lewiston City Hall, per the Maine Wire and the Bangor Daily News.
• 20 Oct: Maine Wire reporter Jon Fetherston, observing early voting, says he saw interpreters “pointing at the ballots” and “a couple of people actually touching the ballots” (as quoted by the Daily Wire).
• 23 Oct: the Secretary of State’s office says it has complaints of “intrusive filming, photography and harassment of voters” at City Hall (Sun Journal). The same day, Maine Morning Star reports that the Justice Department will send election monitors to Portland and Lewiston.
• 30 Oct: the Maine Wire posts a clip it says shows a translator “clearly” filling in a ballot (Snopes).
• 31 Oct: the Bangor Daily News reports that U.S. Attorney Andrew Benson’s office confirms only that the footage is under “review”.
• 2–3 Nov: the posts above circulate. The Maine Wire’s embedded post goes up at 16:55 UTC on 3 Nov, Election Day.
• 3 Nov: Snopes leaves the claim unrated “because of a lack of evidence”. DOJ monitors are at the polls in Maine, and the Secretary of State reports no issues with them so far (WGME).
• 4 Nov: DW Fact Check says the footage “appears genuine” but the fraud claim “is not supported by the available evidence”.

What believers claim

The Maine Wire’s case is that the footage shows “left-wing NGOs” using non-English-speaking voters to obtain ballots and then instructing them “on how to vote a party line ticket for Democrats”, sometimes filling ballots in for them. It calls this a “blatant violation of state law”. The outlet says it reviewed CCTV obtained under Maine’s Freedom of Access Act, and that 140 hours of footage show more than 200 Somali voters getting help (as reported by the Daily Wire). Its editor, Steve Robinson, wrote on 31 Oct that he had reviewed about 20% of it (Bangor Daily News).

What the research found

The footage looks genuine. DW Fact Check, the Bangor Daily News and Snopes all treat it as real City Hall video. Nobody has said it was staged or edited. The dispute is about what it shows.
