Case no.: RW-POL-2026-646
Subject: Viral video of ballot drop box pickup in San Diego
Event: Tue 3 Nov 2026 (Election Day)
Report date: 4 Nov 2026
Location: Library drop box on Voltaire Street, San Diego, CA
Status: CLOSED · DEBUNKED

GRADE: DEBUNKED

The claim

On Election Day, Amy Reichert posted a video on X headed “VERY IMPORTANT: DISTURBING REPORT FROM SAN DIEGO BALLOT DROP-OFF LOCATION.” It showed workers at a library drop box on Voltaire Street removing ballots and loading them into vehicles. The posts claimed the ballots were being mishandled and carried off in “unmarked vans” with out-of-state plates. A second post pointed to vehicles with Washington plates in Point Loma. AFP describes both posts in its fact-check. We don’t repost or link the video here; AFP’s fact-check covers it.

Timeline

  • 6 Oct 2026: Reichert makes an earlier claim, about ripped-open ballots dumped in a downtown San Diego lot, which San Diego Newsline reports on.
  • 3 Nov 2026 (Election Day): the drop box video and a follow-up post about Washington plates spread on X.
  • 3 Nov: the Republican National Committee tells NewsNation that its own monitors flagged the overflowing drop box to the county.
  • 3 Nov: the San Diego County Registrar of Voters answers AFP by email: there are no issues, and the vehicles are rentals.
  • 3 Nov, 8 p.m.: California drop boxes close.
  • Through 10 Nov: mail ballots postmarked by Election Day can still arrive and count (within 7 days, per the California Secretary of State).
  • 4 Nov: AFP publishes its fact-check.

What believers claim

The story is that ordinary-looking vans, some with out-of-state plates, are a sign that someone outside the official process was taking ballots. Seen without context, two people emptying a drop box into a plain vehicle can look alarming. The claim also lands on a county where Reichert had already alleged ballot dumping weeks before.

What the research found

The workers were the county’s. In the video, the workers’ vests read “Registrar of Voters County of San Diego”, according to AFP. Hutzell, answering for the Registrar, told AFP: “Voted ballots are being collected and returned securely … in accordance with established chain-of-custody procedures.” The office added: “We can confirm that there are no issues.”
