A Month of Booms Puts a Texas School on Lockdown

Case no. RW-BC-2026-016
Subject: Repeated window-rattling booms over Winters, Texas
Event: About a month of booms through September 2026
First report: 25 September 2026, 11:11 am CDT (KTXS) · Last checked: 4 Nov 2026
Location: Winters, Runnels County, Texas
Status · Grade: Open · CREDIBLE (military aircraft, unit unknown)

What happened

KTXS in Abilene reported on 25 September 2026 that “a series of unexplained sonic booms has rattled Winters over the past month, shaking windows and buildings.” Residents described loud explosions “often followed by the sound of an aircraft overhead.”

“It sounded like an explosion,” resident Ronnie McWhirter told the station. “It was really loud. It rattled all the windows in my house.” City Administrator Kay O’Dell said the windows in her City Hall office shake too, and that “we’ve had lots of citizens talking about it, and they all have the same experience.”

After one boom, Winters ISD briefly locked down. “It actually caused kind of a brief shutdown of our elementary school,” O’Dell said. “Out of an abundance of caution, they made sure they were safe.”

The footage

There is no video or audio recording of any boom in the reporting. KTXS’s photo gallery, by Tavish Leffall, shows the Winters water tower, road signs, a City Hall sign and the sky over town. These show the setting, not the event. No resident doorbell or dash-camera audio has been published.

Timeline

  • 14 October 1947: The Bell X-1 becomes the first airplane to fly faster than sound (Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum).
  • 14 and 16 April 2020: Booms rattle Brownwood, another Central Texas town. NAS Fort Worth confirms two F-16s flying supersonic above 30,000 feet (Brownwood News).
  • 16 November 2023: A boom shakes Wise County. Officials attribute it to military aircraft (NBC 5 DFW).
  • About late August to September 2026: Booms are heard repeatedly in Winters. One triggers a brief school lockdown.
  • 25 September 2026, 11:11 am CDT: KTXS publishes. Dyess AFB has told the city its aircraft aren’t responsible.
  • 28 September 2026: KTXS updates the story. No source has been named.
  • 4 November 2026: No follow-up naming a source turns up in this review.

What witnesses reported

People across town report the same pattern: a sharp explosion-like boom, rattling windows, then the sound of a plane, but no plane in sight. KTXS writes that residents “hear the plane after the boom, but have yet to actually see it.” The booms were felt both in homes and at City Hall.

What the research found

The single news report is solid. It names two people, quotes them directly and includes an agency response. That response is the key fact the live post left out: “Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene told Winters city officials that none of its aircraft are responsible.” KTXS adds that “it remains unclear what aircraft are producing the booms, where they are coming from, or why.”
