What happened
On Friday 21 August 2026, a visitor from Germany reported a sighting to the Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register. The register’s 2026 list records that “at 11.58 he spotted a creature that was approximately 6 meters long at a distance of approximately 300 meters.”
The entry continues: “He said that the object was black and surfaced, remained at the water’s surface for about 20 seconds, and then disappeared again.” The witness also said it “was swimming close to the surface and appeared to have a head.” He took a photo, which the register publishes with the entry.
The register does not say where on the loch he was standing, what the weather was or whether boats were nearby. There is no video.
Timeline
- 1933: Researchers suggest a giant eel as one explanation for that year’s wave of Loch Ness sightings, according to Professor Neil Gemmell of the University of Otago.
- 2007: A video filmed by Gordon Holmes shows what Gemmell describes as “a four metre torpedo-like shape” on the surface.
- 5 September 2019: Gemmell’s team announces the results of the first environmental DNA (eDNA) survey of Loch Ness, based on 250 water samples.
- January 2023: The Skeptic magazine publishes a detailed explainer on boat wakes on Loch Ness.
- January 2025: Charles Paxton, Adrian Shine and Valentin Popov’s analysis of Loch Ness report data is accepted by the Journal of Statistics and Data Science Education.
- 21 August 2026, 11:58: The sighting. The register logs it among 15 entries for 2026.
- 4 November 2026: This rewrite re-checks the register entry.
What believers claim
For believers, this report has the classic features: a large, dark, animate-looking shape with a head, surfacing and diving in daylight. The register’s busy 2026, with 15 entries so far against 3 in 2024 and 6 in 2025, is taken as a sign that something is active in the loch.
The witness himself describes “a creature.” But the register’s own wording also calls it “the object,” and nothing in the entry goes beyond what one person saw for about 20 seconds.
What the research found
1. The register entry is real and specific. It gives the date, a time (11:58), a size (about 6 m), a distance (about 300 m), a duration (about 20 seconds), a colour (black) and one feature (a possible head), along with a photo. It is a first-hand report, which is the most useful kind.
